Guide to choosing a Wingfoil board
Wingfoiling is one of the fastest-growing water sports. Thanks to the foil under the board and the wing held in your hand, you can fly over the water even in light winds.
Choosing the right wingfoil board is essential to learn quickly and have fun right from the first sessions.
In this ZZSURF guide we explain how to choose the perfect board based on:
- Rider weight
- Experience level
- Wind conditions

1. The volume of the table: the most important factor
When starting out with wingfoiling, the volume of the board is the most important element because it determines stability and buoyancy.
A board with more volume makes it much easier:
- to keep one's balance
- starting from the water
- get up on the foil
General rule
For beginners we recommend:
Board volume = rider weight + 30/40 liters
| Rider weight | Recommended volume |
|---|---|
| 60 kg | 90 – 100 L |
| 70 kg | 100 – 110 L |
| 80 kg | 110 – 120 L |
| 90 kg | 120 – 130 L |
→ Ideal wingfoil boards for beginners
2. Table dimensions
Besides volume, the size of the board also greatly influences ease of use.
Length
Longer boards are generally easier to learn on.
- 5'5" – 6'5" → perfect for beginners
- shorter boards → greater maneuverability
Length
A wider board offers more stability.
- 26” – 30” → ideal for learning
3. Shape and design of the board
Modern wingfoil boards are designed to make launch easier and improve control over the foil.
Concave deck
Improves stability and foot control on the board.
Wide and compact outline
Increases balance and makes starting easier.
Bottom optimized for take-off
Many boards have hulls designed to reduce resistance in the water and promote the lift of the foil.

4. Rigid or inflatable board?
Hard boards
Hardboards offer:
- greater performance
- more direct control
- better efficiency on the foil
Inflatable boards
Inflatable boards are perfect for those who travel or have limited space.
- easy to transport
- softer and safer
- very compact
5. With straps or strapless?
Many wingfoil boards allow you to mount foot straps .
With straps
- greater control
- useful in strong winds
- helps with the first departures
Strapless
- more freedom of movement
